Poggio Antico is located in the city of Montalcino. The estate is mentioned for the first time at the beginning of the 19th century but at that time no vines were planted - it was only wood and fields. The development of Poggio Antico as a winery is much later in the 1970s where the first vineyards were planted and the winery was built.

In 1984 the estate was bought by Nuccia and Giancarlo Nuccia Gloder, a family from Milan. They were very excited about Tuscany and Montalcino especially. Today it is their daughter Paolo who is running the estate together with her husband Alberto Montefiori.

At present the estate has about 200 hectares (500 acres) where 33 ha (82 acres) are planted with vines. Poggio Antico is situated at about 450 meters (1,476 feet) above sea level which makes them one of the highest altitude producers of Brunello in Montalcino.

Most of the grapes grown are Sangiovese with a small portion (2.5 hectare/6 acres) with Cabernet Sauvignon. The Cabernet is used in the wine, Madre.

Poggio Antico makes the following wines:

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG
Brunello di Montalcino Altero DOCG
Brunello di Montalcino Riserva DOCG

Rosso di Montalcino
Madre, IGT
Grappa

While the “standard” Brunello is made in a traditional style, the Poggio Antico Altero is made in a more modern style. It is being aged in tonneaux’s of 500-liter made in french oak for 24 months instead of the normal 36 months in large slovonian oak barrels, which is used for the standard Brunello. The Madre is made of  50% Sangiovese and 50% Cabernet Sauvignon - its a typical SuperTuscan wine. It is aged for 18 months in 500 liter French oak barrels and another 12 months in bottle before release.
